A retrospective catalog dedicated to the films of Hayao Miyazaki. The visual concept was inspired by Miyazaki’s sketchbooks and drawing process, exploring the relationship between preliminary sketches and finished film frames. Throughout the catalog, line drawings and completed imagery are combined to create a visual language that reflects the craft, imagination, and creative process behind his work.
Catalog Structure
The catalog includes ten films from Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli period, alongside a biography and articles. Each film chapter presents general information, a short synopsis, and three spreads that show the creative process behind a scene- from sketches, to a half-sketch half-final stage, to the completed frame.
Design research & sketches
I began the project by researching Miyazaki’s work and exploring visual directions that could reflect his creative process. From there, I developed an elongated format inspired by animation frames and sequences, while maintaining a clean aesthetic influenced by Japanese design principles. The goal was to create a balance between expressive sketches and a clear, minimal layout.
